So, here's a bit about me some of y'all may not know. I LOVE to dance. In High School, my friend and I ditched all the parties and typical hangs to hit the college clubs to dance. We could care less about the guys, about partying - we wanted to dance! We were the first ones there, the last to leave and only left the floor when slow songs played to get some water. I was the girl on the platforms. Yes, I'm a singer/performer, but I didn't get on the platforms for attention. I needed the space to get my jam on.
So I marry my husband - a drummer, who HATES to dance. His motto is: "I provide the beat so that others can dance." Oh, he's given in a few times and danced with me, but I could tell it was so painful for him. How a person can have each limb performing an entirely different rhythm, but can't translate that to dancing is beyond me, but back to the subject.
One of my goals, while losing my weight, was to try a Capoeira class - a martial arts, music infused dance class that would also use my gymnastic background. But after my many foot injuries (thanks to gymnastics), I left that dream in fear of really hurting myself. I was a bit bummed, I must admit.
So that's when I started running. I've been running since August of 2008 and have to admit that I'm bored. The treadmill is great for producing sweat, but is dreadfully ho-hum! I'm an outside runner, but this Vegas heat makes it near impossible to enjoy it. And you can run the indoor track until you start feeling akin to a hamster on a wheel. So bottom line is I have a love/hate relationship with running. Many times, I have to force myself to do it (like today), but I love the quick results and the activity points earned. I've officially hit a slump, which doesn't bode well for my 500 mile goal.
Onto Zumba Fitness... I recently visited a friend in Denver and she asked me to come along. OH.MY.WORD. I was instantly hooked. I don't think I stopped smiling the entire time! As soon as I got back home, I began my search for classes. I'm not a gym member, so I tried a few outside of the gym. Lemme tell you.. that was NOT the same class I attended. "Jazz Hands" don't exist in Zumba!
So, about a week or so ago, I decided to try a gym to see it they offered the morsel I tasted in Denver. I found my place - I would have joined that night after that class. It's fun, energetic, sexy and I don't feel like I'm working out, but the sweat to my navel tells me that I did.
All this to say, if you are in a workout rut - try something new. Go back to something you love. In this class, there are no limits. All sizes, kinds of people are in the class workin' it. Some with rhythm, and some....well... who kinda look like their stomping on bugs, but hey - they are sweating right there with me!
I'm officially addicted and love every minute of it!!!
